Do you need a tooth extraction?

When it comes to treating a damaged tooth, our initial approach typically involves a filling, crown, or root canal. But if your tooth is badly decayed or severely infected, an extraction may be the best option for the future of your smile.

Other causes for tooth removal include:

  • ZImpacted wisdom teeth
  • ZGum disease
  • ZCrowded teeth
  • ZCracked roots
  • ZExternal resorption

While extracting a tooth is always a last resort, it’s not the end for your smile. Our Ozark tooth extraction process always includes a plan to replace the tooth and restore your smile, as necessary.

Simple vs. surgical tooth extraction

The biggest difference between simple and surgical dental extraction is the need for an incision.

  • Simple tooth extraction — performed on teeth that are visible in the mouth, under local anesthesia.
  • Surgical extraction — a more complex removal that could include when the affected tooth is fractured, below the gum line, or it hasn’t yet fully erupted.

At Excel Dental, we offer both simple and surgical extractions. Have you been told that you need to have a tooth removed? We also offer second opinions and would love to meet with you.

FAQ about extractions

Does tooth extraction hurt?

We’re dedicated to ensuring a comfortable, stress-free experience. In addition to numbing the area around your tooth, we also offer nitrous and relaxing techniques.

Do I need to remove my wisdom teeth?

While some individuals are able to comfortably accommodate wisdom teeth, many people don’t have the space in their mouth, which can make their wisdom teeth difficult to keep clean and cause pain or alignment problems. Additionally, sometimes the wisdom tooth is not erupting in the correct pathway and can become horizontally impacted. We’ll help you understand whether or not removing your wisdom teeth is the right choice for you.

What are the aftercare instructions when a tooth is removed?

After treatment, we’ll provide you with detailed aftercare instructions, which typically include:

  • Refraining from rinsing your mouth for at least 24 hours after the procedure.
  • Avoiding physically demanding activities.
  • Eating soft foods until you feel comfortable enough to chew.
  • Using a cold compress or pad around the cheek area to ease swelling.
  • Avoiding smoking and drinking alcohol for as long as possible, as they interfere with the healing process.
  • Complete any antibiotics that have been prescribed to you.
